Ecommerce Buyer's Guide

First-hand research
An excellent way of assessing the capabilities and expertise of e-commerce service providers is to study and use websites they've already created. Think of yourself as a customer of the sites. This will give you valuable insights and ideas.

  • Are the sites easy to use?
  • Do the sites look good?
  • Does the search function work properly?
  • Is it straightforward to add and delete items from the shopping carts?
  • Is there a help section and is it useful?
  • Do the e-commerce pages look tacked on to the rest of the website or are they compatible in style and content?

If you feel happy using these sample sites, you can safely assume that other people do as well. Remember: a site that frustrates customers won't make a sale because on the Internet it's easy to exit and try elsewhere.

When there are apparent problems with a site, make notes and ask the e-commerce service provider for an explanation.

It's even worth placing an order for a cheap item on one of these sites. You can then discover the

  • post and packing charges
  • payment process
  • security system

Once you place the order, see how long it takes for a confirmation email to arrive. Look at the content of this email and consider whether it's good enough for your own business. Does it tell you when you can expect delivery, for instance? Also check any further emails such as the confirmation of despatch.

A site may offer you the chance to track your order online. If so, take this opportunity to look at the tracking process and see whether it's clearly worded and accurate.

For your own benefit, you might also want to list ways of improving the sites. Did the site owners miss opportunities for cross selling? Could the site have used better images and text?

During your research, you may well find that some of a site's functions are not working. It's possible that the site's owner has asked the provider to switch these off, so their unavailability may not be a sign of faulty software. Check with the e-commerce service provider to make sure.

Demos
If an e-commerce service provider gives you a demo of the software, work through it from start to finish. You might also want to seek a second opinion by asking a member of staff to do the same. The better you understand the software, the more confident you can be that it will suit your business and your ability to use it.

Training
Even if you've spent time on a demo, always ask the e-commerce service provider for training. You want to be as familiar as possible with your site's functions so you can use it to its full potential.
