Identifying your web design goals

Web Site Design Buyer's Guide

Surf the Internet and you soon discover the range of websites that are available. Some are just one page long and built from straightforward templates; others have page after page of information and include images, videos, adverts and links to other sites.

What you need to decide, therefore, is what do you want your website for and what do you hope it will achieve? These objectives dictate the cost of your website and the designer you choose for the work. Do you want your website to:

  • Act like a business card or leaflet and offer basic details for your site visitor?
  • Give you site visitor data for marketing or sales?
  • Allow your visitors to interact with the site, other visitors and you via online forums?
  • Provide your visitors with details of the support and service your organisation offers?
  • Sell products and services using online transaction software?

You may, of course, want some or all of these features. When you've made your decision, you can think about the specifics of your website design.

  • Do you want your logo to appear on the site, or do you want the designer to produce one for you?
  • What level of security does the site need to have? If you're building a site with online transactions, you'll want to assure your customers they can buy without fear of their personal details falling into the wrong hands.
  • Do you want your visitors to track any orders they've made on the website?
  • Are you interested in offering games, videos and calculators on the site to improve each visitor's experience?
  • Do you need a list of sections and headings for the pages of the website? These might include product information; company details; contacts; articles; news items; and press releases.

You don't need to produce hard and fast answers to all these questions. A good website designer will talk you through them anyway and give various solutions. In fact, it's useful to maintain a flexible attitude so you get the best website to suit your needs.

Nonetheless, spend time producing a rough outline of your website. You'll then know where you can add extras or cut back, depending on your budget.
