Email marketing is split into two categories: B2B (Business to Business) and B2C (Business to Consumer). Let's look at each in turn...

B2B Email Lists

B2B email marketing lists are for companies looking to expand their client base or for those businesses that sell products and services direct to other businesses, rather than to consumers. An email marketing company will help you identify what type of business you are looking to contact and will put together a focused list of contacts for you.

A B2B email list will target individual businesses by breaking down your target market in these following areas:

  • Type of business - Making sure that you are only getting in touch with businesses that are relevant to the product and service you are offering.
  • Geographical Area - You only need contact businesses that you can legitimately service: if your company only works within London, then you should only be contacting companies within London. Why waste time on clients and customers that you cannot possibly service?
  • Size of business - Depending on the type of business you are looking to target, it is sometimes possible for an Email Marketing company to only target companies of a certain size. This can be determined by a company's turnover, or by the number of people they employ.
  • Individual contact - It is sometimes possible to target individuals who hold a certain job title within certain organizations. That way you know that your information is going to be seen by the key decision maker, the person who really should be seeing what you have to offer.
B2C Email Lists

B2C email marketing lists target the consumers who have shown a relevant interest in the product or service that your company offers. Using opt-in information, the email marketing company can assemble a list of consumers that will have a genuine interest in what you have to offer. B2C email data is governed by strict controls so you can be assured that the people you are contacting have given their permission to be contacted in this way.

B2C lists can be broken down in the following ways to make sure you are only getting in touch with people who are right for your business. As well as geography, the list can be targeted by these criteria:

  • Interests and hobbies - The beauty of Email Marketing is that this breakdown can be extremely specific. You can make contact with hikers, surfers, theatre fans, magazine subscribers, anybody who would really appreciate what your company has to offer. By knowing they have a pre-existing interest in your product or service then half the battle of 'selling' your product is already won.
  • Income - If you are selling a service that only applies to people within certain financial demographics (eg wealth management) or a product that would perhaps only interest people with a large income (eg luxury cars or holidays) then you can target your list to hit these people.
  • Age - It is possible to only contact people within a certain age group.
  • Marital Status - Further refine your target search by contacting consumers based on their marital status.

The third option within email marketing is Public Sector lists. Certain companies will hold lists of public sector employees. This is a more specialized field and fewer companies will offer these lists but they are available if that is what you require.
